Quick Before it Melts

Splendor and awe

I’ve just spent the better part of two hours trying to put into words just what makes the National Parks Project so special, and have sadly realized nothing I can say will ever do it justice.  The NPP’s homepage opens with a flash presentation that succinctly sets the stage:

“In 1911, Parks Canada was founded, becoming the first National Parks Service in the world.  On the eve of its centennial, Canada’s finest artists embarked on a historic expedition to capture the majesty of the landscape in music and film.  Thirteen filmmakers, thirty-nine musicians, thirteen National Parks of Canada.”

You have to see and hear this to believe it.  Shad, The Besnard Lakes‘s Jace Lasek, Sarah Harmer, Broken Social Scene/Apostle of Hustle‘s Andrew Whiteman, John K. Samson of The Weakerthans, Mark Hamilton from Woodpigeon, Ohbijou‘s Casey Mecija as many, many more of the artists regaulrly featured on QBiM all participate in this epic, and awe-inspiring project.  It is screening at The Royal Theatre (608 College Street, Toronto) and expands to The Regent Theatre (551 Mount Pleasant Road, Toronto) starting today till June 2.  The Royal is showing parts of the project each night, but The Regent is screening all 127 minutes each evening starting at 7 pm (with intermission).  You can check here for information on which films in the project are showing at what time and on what day.  If, like me, you’re no where near Toronto and want to experience the National Parks Project in the comfort of your own home, you can buy the entire series in HD from iTunes hereThe soundtrack album is also available via iTunes, as well as in stores on CD and double vinyl LP.

In it, you'll hear a the broad strokes of someone who's explored a range of sonic influencers--from 13th Floor Elevators to Ride, The Velvet Underground to Atlas Sound--and is now drilling down through the gauzy haze of guitar drone to find their essence, their truth.
