Quick Before it Melts

Metal meets

by  |  October 7, 2011

The last two weeks have seen so many album releases that I can barely catch my breath, or keep up with the blogging.  I’m counting seven new releases in the last 14 days that I have wanted to cover on QBiM, and with this post, I’ve managed to get them all in.  A week later, mind you, but it’s covered nonetheless.

Ohbijou introduced the world to their third longplayer, Metal Meets last Tuesday.  The record was produced by The Besnard Lakes’ Jace Lasek, who helped Ohbijou find some new textures and effects to add even more colour to their mini orchestral pop symphonies.  For the first time, band members Ryan Carley and Jenny Mecija have contributed to the songwriting, which, on the whole, features a sombre, somewhat pensive mood.  It’s not a downer by any stretch of the imagination, but rather finds Ohbijou is a reflective mood, and a sound that suits them well.

The band played Ottawa last night, and are making their way west through October and November:

Oct 13 – London, ON @ The Aeolian Hall
Oct 14 – Peterborough, ON @ Market Hall
Oct 18 – Halifax, NS – Halifax Pop Explosion @ Reflections Cabaret
Oct 20 – Sackville, NB – George’s Roadhouse

In it, you'll hear a the broad strokes of someone who's explored a range of sonic influencers--from 13th Floor Elevators to Ride, The Velvet Underground to Atlas Sound--and is now drilling down through the gauzy haze of guitar drone to find their essence, their truth.
