Quick Before it Melts

Kook soul

by  |  March 16, 2012

There’s a new Parlovr album on its way, and this is as good a time as any for those unfamiliar with the band to get some serious cramming in.  Based in Montreal, the three piece started making music in and around 2006-07, putting together their self-titled debut independently before catching the eye of Dine Alone Records, who signed and re-released the disc to critical raves.  The trio have a particularly interesting sound, one that takes familiar pop elements and twists them into something slightly bizarre, definitely unexpected, and completely unique.  They’ve been hailed as one of Montreal’s top bands to watch, and rightly so.

So why have I never written about them before, you ask?  Well I have, sort of, in a round about way.  Drummer Jeremy MacCuish has been featured on QBiM quite a bit as part of Nightwood (who are now known as Cobra & Vulture), so that has to count for something, right?  Parlovr have just been one of those bands that I always said I’d get around to talking about, but never did.  That’s going to change this year, though, I am sure.  “You Only Want It ‘Cause You’re Lonely” is one of those rare songs that grabs you by the lapels, pulls you close and lavishes a wet slobbery kiss on the lips that you hope never ends.  Retro in all the right places, timeless and painfully modern at the same time, it’s the kind of song that makes blogging worth while.

Unfortunately, the only way to hear this cracking new track (for now) is to stream it via this link.  I’ll update the post as permissions for embedding/downloading of the track change. The fact  that I’m willing to write about and paste a link that leads to the song (as opposed to the actual song embedded or available for download) should say something about how much I am loving this track.  I don’t usually break my self-imposed only-posting-songs-that-can-be heard-or-downloaded rule for just anyone, or anything.

Parlovr’s new album, Kook Soul is due May 15, 2012 on Dine Alone Records.

In it, you'll hear a the broad strokes of someone who's explored a range of sonic influencers--from 13th Floor Elevators to Ride, The Velvet Underground to Atlas Sound--and is now drilling down through the gauzy haze of guitar drone to find their essence, their truth.
