DOMINIONATED THE THIRD

We’re pleased as punch to bring you DOMINIONATED the THIRD, part three in our ongoing series of “compendiums of classic Canadian songs covered by contemporary Canadian artists”. The concept is simple: we ask a bunch of artists to choose a favourite Canadian tune and give us their interpretation of it. The execution is mind-boggling. I can’t thank […]

EVENING HYMNS >> “All of Your Money”

Though he laid out a new musical path on last year’s Quiet Energies, Evening Hymns‘ Jonas Bonnetta held a few songs from the album’s recording sessions back, explaining that the additional songs “…didn’t fit the flow of the record,” and would have made the sequence too long for a vinyl pressing. “…We decided to hold off and release […]

EVENING HYMNS >> Quiet Energies

I connected with Evening Hymns’ last record, Spectral Dusk, on a visceral, deeply empathetic level. At the time of that record’s release, I was facing the upcoming 15th anniversary of my father’s death, a milestone that felt incredibly foreign and yet carried ingrained memories. Spectral Dusk chronicled Evening Hymns songwriter Jonas Bonnetta’s reckoning of his own father’s recent death, and in listening to it’s haunting interludes, I came to understand that the notion of time being a healer is wrong. Time offers distance, perspective. But you don’t ever recover from a profound loss; you go ahead as a changed person, with a new normal.

RE-DiSCOVERiNG >> EVENING HYMNS • Spectral Dusk

Quick Before It Melts is dipping into its archives this summer, throwing back to some favourite records and interviews, and re-discovering a few lost treasures along the way. A version of today’s re-posted review of Evening Hymns’ Spectral Dusk originally appeared on August 14, 2012. A few nights before my father passed away, I found myself awake in the middle […]

EVENING HYMNS • “All My Life I Have Been Running”

Anyone who’s ever suffered a heartbreaking and life-altering loss knows how difficult it can be to break out of the spiral it creates. The past comes rushing through the present, like an infection that propagates grief, re-triggers emotions, and blocks the future from view. What’s often necessary is a sudden jolt to knock you off […]

QUICK BEFORE IT MELTS presents DOMINIONATEDdeux

A year ago today, I shared with Quick Before It Melts readers news about DOMINIONATED, a “compendium of classic Canadian songs covered by contemporary Canadian artists” that came together thanks to a dedicated and enthusiastic group of musicians who took me up on the challenge of recording a version of their favourite Canadian song of the 80s or 90s. The […]

2015 NEW MUSiC PREViEW

photo: John Carey Every year-end comes with a perfunctory look back at the 12 months that were, but when the corner turned on 2015 a week ago, I set my sights firmly on the months to come and the new Canadian music they’ll be bringing. While nowhere near a definitive list, the 10 artists in Quick Before It […]

iNTRODUCiNG: Jon Hynes

It feels odd “introducing’ you to Ottawa-based, Newfoundland-bred songwriter Jon Hynes when you’re more familiar with him than you realize.  In the past few years, Hynes has played bass on tour with Hey Rosetta! and The Hidden Cameras, guitar with Donovan Woods, and is now a member of of Quick Before It Melts’ perennial favourites, Evening Hymns. On Tuesday next week, the 40 Polaris Music Prize nominated albums will be whittled down to a short list of 10 contenders.  Pundits from across the provinces are going to be weighing in on what should have been included, what shouldn’t, and what was missing from the long list that deserves the title of best […]
