Quick Before it Melts

Lightning strikes

The Magic

Six years to work on one record isn’t that excessive, when you consider that a few days ago My Bloody valentine announced that they’d finished working on a record that’s been over 20 years in the making.  In comparison, Guelph, ON duo The Magic are working at lightning speed, having finally completed their debut album, Ragged Glory for Half Machine Records earlier this year.

Brothers Evan and Geordie Gordon are at the core of The Magic, having been joined live by by Sylvie Smith (now of Evening Hymns) on vocals and keys and Aaron Curtis on drums.  While the brothers Gordon having been tinkering away on their swaggering snythpop Ragged Glory album, they’ve both done time in other bands: together they’ve been (and still are) members of Islands and Human Highways), while individually Geordie’s been part of Barmitzvah Brothers (Geordie), and Evan’s been in Royal City and Constantines.

The idea was to make a full-on pop record, built from demos Geordie recorded with a synth and drum machine, fleshed out by his brother Evan’s contributions.  Much like yesterday’s post subject TOPS, The Magic take familiar elements from the halcyon days of pristine 80s soul/pop and turn it on its head.  Check out “No Sound” to get a sense of the frivolity and fun they’ve been having in the studio.

Ragged Glory is available now on Bandcamp.

In it, you'll hear a the broad strokes of someone who's explored a range of sonic influencers--from 13th Floor Elevators to Ride, The Velvet Underground to Atlas Sound--and is now drilling down through the gauzy haze of guitar drone to find their essence, their truth.
