WHOOP-Szo

There are as many definitions of a ‘good life’ as there are lives in the world. Self-proclaimed “sludge-folk wonders” WHOOP-Szo have put their own idea of living a healthy, spiritual life to tape with “Bmaadiziwin” (an Ojibwa word representing a spiritual way of life), a new cassette single that finds their ever-evolving sound rolling across sonic thundering sonic skies, and erupting in a shower of shredded guitar.

Think of it as a soundtrack for a constantly shifting, ever moving way of life, mirroring the year of movement WHOOP-Szo have been on: a month long residency in Fredericton, NB, working in nearby First Nations and supporting the local music community; collaborating with Jon Mckiel, writing and recording songs for The Greville Tapes Music Club series; playing Lawnya Vawnya, Flourish Festival, Grickle Grass, Ottawa Explosion, Sled Island, Victoria’s SHAKE! Fest 3, Sappy Fest, and Shifty Bits.

“Bmaadiziwin” is streaming below, and there’ a good chance the good folks of Lethbridge, AB will hear it live when WHOOP-Szo perform at Attainable Records tonight. Upcoming dates already confirmed are below:

In it, you'll hear a the broad strokes of someone who's explored a range of sonic influencers--from 13th Floor Elevators to Ride, The Velvet Underground to Atlas Sound--and is now drilling down through the gauzy haze of guitar drone to find their essence, their truth.
