Winnipeg artist Micah Visser impressed me with his earnest, optimistic music last spring, all at once unadorned and yet bursting with possibility. I heard a complexity belying his youthfulness; he was a folk poet dressed up in indie rock clothing.
Visser and his band are trying out new duds on their latest single, the delightfully titled “I Will Not Return as a Tourist”. Awash in synthetic strings and propelled by heartbeat-driven percussion, the song expertly plays with tension. A slow building ballad steadily grows in size and stature, like a peacock puffing up its plumage, until all unfurls into a shimmering, synth-soaked showstopper. Today, Visser shares a new lyric video for the song, streaming below.
“I Will Not Return as a Tourist” is available as a name-your-price download now on Bandcamp. Hometown fans can catch Visser on January 30 at Winnipeg’s West End Cultural Centre with Close Talker and Yes We Mystic. Details and tickets are available here.Tags: Micah Visser
