Paradise (in a while)

by  |  August 28, 2012

As you know, I’m already a big fan of Elk (whose latest, Daydreams, is on my Heavy Rotation list), and I’ve been equally impressed this summer by Dusted (whose Total Dust LP is also on Heavy Rotation), so imagine my surprise to find out that Elk’s Josh Korody and Dusted’s Leon Taheny are partners at Candle recording Studios in Toronto.  While that’s cool in its own right, what’s even cooler is the information that led me to this discovery, mainly that Korody has been working on some solo material under the name Breeze alongside his Elk mate Kyle Connolly and Great Bloomers’ Shawn Dell.  With Taheny manning the controls, the trio stepped into the studio to lay down an album’s worth of songs, and now further bolstered by Dustin Hawthorne (of Hot Hot Heat and Islands) and occasional member Louise Burns on keyboards, Breeze is ready to blow our way.

Their sound is as refreshing as the band name implies.  With enough jangle to make Johnny Marr jealous, first single “Paradise (in a while)” and its b-side “Repent” are what August should sound like: hazy, shimmering guitars that sparkle in the sunshine, warm enough to take the chilly bite out of a late summer night.  You’ll be able to get your hands on these tracks on September 11, when they’re released as a digital two-song single and a limited pressing of 100 cassette tapes (including a download card) by Hand Drawn Dracula.  There will be a release party on Saturday September 8, 2012, at Day + Night Salon in Toronto (1389 Dundas Street West) for those who want to get the jump on all us regular music buying folk.  We can all enjoy the Adam Seward-directed video for “Paradise (in a while)” (embedded above) now, as we wait for news on the as-yet-unannounced full length.  It’s already high on my list of anticipated new records.

In it, you'll hear a the broad strokes of someone who's explored a range of sonic influencers--from 13th Floor Elevators to Ride, The Velvet Underground to Atlas Sound--and is now drilling down through the gauzy haze of guitar drone to find their essence, their truth.
