Songs 2014 art

Welcome to Quick Before It Melts’ fourth annual SONGS compilation!

In 2011, I began compiling collections of the 75 songs that rocked and rolled my year, and offering them up in a five-volume, downloadable collection. Last year I experimented with five separate continuous mix-tapes, but have gone back to zipping up each individual track for easy downloading (just right-click on the compilation title below, and save). There will be a new volume of the compilation posted every day this week from now to Friday, leaving you with 75 of the year’s best Canadian tracks.

I should also mention that I’m especially proud of this year’s compilation cover art, a little project I undertook along with creating the trading cards that announced my favourite albums of 2014 last week. It’s based on a classic K-Tel collection of the 1980s called Hits Explosion, a record whose grooves I wore out when I was a kid, and now have multiple copies of as an adult (thank you garage sale record bins). You can see the original cover art, and listen to the original K-Tel record here.

In it, you'll hear a the broad strokes of someone who's explored a range of sonic influencers--from 13th Floor Elevators to Ride, The Velvet Underground to Atlas Sound--and is now drilling down through the gauzy haze of guitar drone to find their essence, their truth.
