There has been a fair bit of buzz swirling around The Elwins in the last little while, what with their debut LP, And I Thank You making the list of Exclaim! magazine’s most anticipated albums of 2012. Said album, having been in the can from some time now, was released independently on Tuesday of this week after a search for a record company led the band to take matters into their own hands and get their product out.
For such a hotly tipped and highly anticipated record, And I Thank You sounds more like a memento from a time traveling trip into the recent past. Their effervescent pop is of the sweetest indie variety, the kind that caused an outbreak of ear cavities back in the ’00s. What The Elwins do, they do extremely well. There isn’t a single stinker of the 10 songs on And I Thank You, a rare treat when listening to new music these days. “I Miss You And I” demonstrates their ability to strip the songs back to simpler arrangements without losing the vitality of poppier cuts like “Stuck in the Middle” and “Forgetful Assistance”.
The Elwins are celebrating the release of And I Thank You tomorrow night with a CD release show at The Burroughes (639 Queen Street West, Toronto) with guests The Bicycles and Meligrove Band (more details at the gig’s Facebook events page). And I Thank You is available from the band through their Bandcamp page.
