My first introduction to hip hop came by way of De La Soul’s Three Feet High and Rising, a sample-rich concept album that was more party than political.  It was the familiarity of the samples (whether I could identify them clearly or not was a moot point) that drew me in then, and it’s what I’m loving most about Shad‘s new, free mixtape, Melancholy and the Infinite ShadnessBuilding beats around samples from Milli Vanilli, The Breeders, Lenny Kravitz, Prince and PM Dawn, then dropping his too-cool-for-old-school rhymes over top, Shad has built a brief, but bouncy summer mix that is over far too soon for my liking.

Melancholy and the Infinite Shadness is available as a pay-what-you-can download from Bandcamp.
