3rd crusade

Last week, Cowboy Junkies released the third album in their ambitious Nomad series, Sing In My Meadow.  To mark their 25th year as a band, The Junkies set out to release 4 albums of new material in 18 months.  …Meadow follows Demons, a collection of Vic Chesnutt covers released earlier this year, and 2010’s  Renmin Park, an album inspired by Michael Timmins’ time in China.  each of the records in the Nomad series has pivoted around a central theme, and Demons is no different.  Long revered for their amazing live performances, Sing In My Meadow attempts to capture the magic of the Cowboy Junkies show: a psychedelic, bluesy exploration of jams and sound that often shocks those expecting to here Margo Timmins softly cooing “Sweet Jane” while the rest of the band politely plays.  It’s a side of their musical personality that sometimes gets muted or ignored when they step into the studio, but here, finally, they’ve committed to tape the brilliance of their live show.

Recorded in just under four days, Sing In My Meadow is easily my favourite of the Nomad series, and further proof that Cowboy Junkies are one of Canada’s national treasures.  Few bands–Canadian or otherwise–have managed to keep challenging and pushing boundaries a quarter century after forming the way that Cowboy Junkies have.  I’ve said it before, and it’s worth saying again: there’s no other band that I followed back in 1989 that I still continue to follow and care about the way I do the Junkies.

Sing I Meadow is available now from the band’s label, Latent Records.
