Do I have power

About half way through Creep On Creepin’ On, the new album from Timber Timbre, it suddenly dawned on me that the prickly, tingly feeling that was moving up my arms and down my spine wasn’t being caused by a drafty window as I had suspected, but by the haunted, spectral R&B swamp blues of this accomplished record.  It was sort of like the tingling feeling you get when you sense there’s something in an empty room with you; you become hyper-sensitive to the slightest disturbance of the atmosphere.

Taylor Kirk, once the lone lumberjack in Timber Timbre is now permanently joined by Simon Trottier and Mika Posen, and Creep On Creepin’ On certainly feels like a band collaboration as opposed to the work of a single auteur.  I can’t actually attest for the recording process, but “Swamp Magic”, the orchestral instrumental at the album’s midpoint, stutters and breathes to life in a way that you just can’t get by laying down multiple overdubs in the studio (now watch me find out that is exactly what they’ve done).

There are classic pop moments like “Woman” and “Black Water” that sparkle and catch your eye through all swampy haze, but as always, Timber Timbre are determined to keep their calling card–that dense and unsettling sound–ever at the ready.  I wasn’t a big fan of their last record, 2009’s Timber Timbre, but surprisingly, I’m very much drawn to this record, which isn’t too far removed from the previous one.  Maybe it’s just timing and my own personal tastes shifting, but as each song ended and the next began, I was drawn further and further into their intoxicating sound.

Creep On Creepin’ On is available now on Arts & Crafts Records.
