Left behind by the digital ships

Musicians like Chad VanGaalen has always been a tough sell for me.  I respect their prolific output and creative spark, but often, I just don’t connect with the music on an emotional  level.  I have a feeling VanGaalen and I are going to be like two ships passing in the night when his latest project, Black Mold, makes it’s debut on August 11.  Snow Blindness Is Crystal Antz (I know, I know, but that’s what he wanted to name the album) is a 19 song electronic instrumental album that gives VanGaalen room to stretch his legs and explore the click, claps, and clomping that give his work such texture and charm.  Both organic and other-dimensional, Snow Blindness Is Crystal Antz (it’s hard to say, isn’t it?  you have to practice it a few times in front of the mirror before you attempt it in public) came together over a number of years, late night by late night, when VanGaalen not only experimented with song structure but also with sound structure; he built some of the synths himself.  In fact, VanGaalen has accumulated so many of these sound experiments that when you purchase a physical version of the album, you’ll get a download code for another digital-only album of 100+ minutes of additional recordings.  So far, I’ve only experienced the two tracks linked to below, but already I’m scratching my head and guessing this opus of ones and zeroes is going to end up being an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, bound by a question mark.

Then again, it just may be my new favourite record.  Ain’t that a kick in the crystal antz?
